Slightly one-upping Ulysses Grant’s famed Italian chef, Jackson hired a French one who could whip up sublime Ouefs a la neige, a custard-based dessert topped with fluffy meringue. Also known as “Floating Islands”, these came back into the American consciousness 125 years after Jackson left office thanks to Julia Child, that master interpreter of Gallic classics.
